What
file formats can be exported?
From the browser plug-in, DjVu can export
files in either DjVu format or BMP (bitmap)
format. The following formats can be exported
from Enterprise Edition: bmp, tiff, tif, jpeg,
ps, pict, ppm, pgm) DjVu Editor can export
to bmp, jpg, jpeg, tif, tiff, pgm, pbm, ppm,
pnm, pict formats.
What
is the difference between DjVu and MrSID?
LizardTech's MrSID is the ideal technology
for encoding high-resolution, dense photographs.
DjVu is engineered for best performance with
documents - whether they be color, black and
white, mixed content or graphics.
Can
DjVu be used to encode original digital files?
Yes. Document Express Desktop
Edition includes the LizardTech Virtual Printer.
With this tool users can encode virtually
any Windows-based application document into
DjVu format.
Is
it lossy encoding?
Yes. The algorithms that
drive the DjVu technology need to slightly
alter original files to enable the dramatic
improvements in viewing speed and performance.
However, at normal resolution sizes, DjVu
documents appear lossless when viewing. While
the encoder for bitonal areas can encode losslessly,
the background layer is a lossy compression
resulting in overall lossy encoding.
Do
I need a special server to host DjVu files?
No. DjVu files can be easily
put onto your Web site or embedded in HTML
documents. However, leveraging LizardTech's
Express Server will provide advanced functionality
and improved performance. For more information
please see www.lizardtech.com/solutions/expressserver
Can
I print a DjVu file?
Yes. Printing DjVu files
is as easy as clicking on the "print"
icon on the browser plug-in toolbar. DjVu
files print crisp, clear documents for easy
reading.
Can
I import a DjVu file into MS Office?
With the DjVu Active X Control for MS Office,
DjVu files can be embedded into most MS Office
documents.
Can
I encode images as well as text?
Yes. Document Express is
optimal for mixed content, meaning images
and text. If a user wishes to encode strictly
photographs, LizardTech recommends our MrSID
product line.
Does
DjVu support annotations such as hyperlinks?
Yes. Highlighted areas and
hyperlinks can be easily added to DjVu documents
using Document Express Desktop Edition (DjVu
Editor). Additionally, the PDF to DjVu command
line encoder, an optional add-on module to
the Enterprise Edition, captures embedded
hyperlinks in PDF documents.
COMPETITIVE
ADVANTAGES:
What advantages does DjVu offer over current
formats? DjVu offers superior image quality
and enhanced viewing flexibility.
How
is DjVu superior to GIF, JPEG, or TIF?
For color pages at 300 dpi containing text
and pictures, DjVu files are between 10 and
30 times smaller than GIF or JPEG with similar
quality levels, and between 500 and 1000 times
smaller than TIF. Additionally, DjVu was specifically
engineered for access speed, so not only are
files considerably smaller, they can be viewed
much more quickly over any network, including
narrowband and wireless.
How
does DjVu compare to PDF?
PDF is primarily designed for documents that
require a high degree of manipulation and
quality printing, while DjVu is designed for
documents that require broad distribution.
LizardTech's newer technology was engineered
to meet the needs of companies and individuals
that distribute large quantities of documents,
or complex content, to a broad, geographically
diverse audience.
In
addition to DjVu's size advantage, ranging
from 5 to 50 times smaller than corresponding
PDFs based on content, the user experience
is also considerably enhanced through rapid
loading, viewing, and easy interaction with
the DjVu document.
What
other advantages does DjVu offer?
DjVu files can be panned, enlarged or reduced
smoothly in real-time. These features are
made possible by intelligent caching; when
a document is opened the first page automatically
appears, while succeeding pages are loaded
as memory allows. If a user selects a later
page in the document, the same process is
repeated, with that page appearing instantly,
and subsequent pages loading as memory allows.
This treatment was designed to enhance the
user experience, allowing maximal flexibility
to load the document, pan or enlarge at the
same time. However, in most cases these processes
will be invisible to the user. When a document
is opened, the first page will appear instantly,
while the rest of the document will load almost
as quickly.
How
does DjVu work with electronic files? (i.e.
Word documents)
DjVu was originally designed for scanning
applications only. With the new LizardTech
Virtual Printer, a component within Document
Express Desktop Edition, and the PDF to DjVu
Command Line Converter, users can now encode
virtually any electronic document from within
a Windows based application.
SCANNING
What type of
scanner do I need?
Document Express Desktop Edition and Professional
Edition accept scans directly from any TWAIN
compliant scanner. They also accept electronic
files (TIFFs, BMPs, etc.) scanned from other
sources such as ISIS scanners.
DjVu
Enterprise does not accept scans directly.
Users can employ any standard scanning application,
and then bring the files into DjVu Enterprise
for fast, automated encoding.
Does
DjVu have batch processing capability?
DjVu Enterprise offers batch and scriptable
processing.
What
are the size limitations on input files?
Current file sizes are limited to 32,000 x
32,000 pixels (approximately 100 inches x
100 inches scanned at 300 dpi.
WORKING
WITH DjVu FILES
Can
you rotate images?
Yes. Rotation can be done
in virtually all encoders and viewers.
Will
users be able to crop out areas of file?
Cropping is not available. A user will have
to do this step prior to converting to DjVu.
Can
I edit a DjVu document?
Yes. Documents can be edited
using DjVu Editor, a component of Document
Express Desktop Edition.
Can
you embed a DjVu file in an HTML page?
Yes. The user needs to have
the DjVu Web Browser Plug-in to accomplish
this. The instructions for doing this are
found in the Plug-in Help File.
